Position: Workshop Shift Manager
Location: Prince Rock Depot, Macadam Road, Prince Rock, Plymouth, PL4 0RZ
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 6+ Months
Working Hours: 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £19.32 per hour

Job Responsibilities
Oversee the day-to-day management of the workshop, ensuring efficient delivery of planned maintenance, reactive repairs, inspections, and MOT testing for the council fleet
Ensure all vehicle inspections, maintenance, and testing are completed in line with legal requirements, VOSA regulations, and operating licence standards
Manage and lead a team of approximately 14 FTE workshop staff, ensuring effective allocation of workload and resources
Control and manage a workshop budget of approximately £750,000, ensuring cost efficiency and financial performance targets are met
Maintain compliance with all health and safety legislation, including risk assessments, safe systems of work, and workplace inspections
Implement and maintain workshop policies, procedures, and operational processes to ensure safe and efficient service delivery
Ensure services are delivered within agreed timescales and meet required quality standards and customer expectations
Manage MOT station operations, ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements and regulatory standards
Oversee scheduling and delivery of maintenance, repairs, inspections, and testing across fleet operations
Manage accident repair processes and ensure timely and cost-effective resolution of vehicle and plant damage
Ensure warranty claims and supplier reimbursements are correctly processed and recovered
Monitor workshop productivity, performance, and income generation using relevant IT systems
Develop and deliver commercial services, including MOT testing and external repair work, supporting business growth and income generation
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate service delivery and resolve operational issues
Handle customer complaints professionally, ensuring timely resolution within corporate standards
Maintain accurate records, documentation, and compliance reporting in line with legal and organisational requirements
Ensure effective stock control and management of workshop materials and supplies
Keep up to date with relevant legislation, industry standards, and best practice
Promote equality, diversity, and positive working practices across all operations
Person Specification
Must-Have Requirements
GCSE Grade A*–C (9–4) in Maths and English, or equivalent
Vehicle technician qualification, or substantial proven experience managing a vehicle workshop
IOSH qualification or equivalent in Health and Safety
Full UK driving licence
Significant experience in managing a workshop or garage environment
Strong understanding of Road Transport Law and fleet compliance requirements
Experience managing MOT testing operations and VOSA-compliant inspection standards
Proven experience leading and managing teams (including workload allocation and performance management)
Strong budget management experience, including cost control and financial accountability
Experience delivering high levels of customer service in a service delivery environment
Ability to manage competing operational priorities under pressure
Strong ICT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
Experience of health and safety management within a workshop environment
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Experience in staff development, training, and performance improvement
Nice-to-Have Requirements
Experience using fleet/workshop management systems (e.g. Tranman or similar)
Experience in commercial service development and income generation
Knowledge of change management within operational services
Experience working within local authority or public sector fleet operations
Understanding of marketing or business planning for commercial workshop services
